Macroinvertebrate Laboratory Unit

In this 5-week lab unit, we will study the aquatic macroinvertebrates.  There is substantial material on macroinvertebrates in your laboratory manual - read it!

We have already collected benthic macroinvertebrates during our first lake sampling trip in September.  These specimens, and those collected during the Clear Creek field trip (Clear Creek) will be supplemented by preserved specimens in our collection.

There are many useful and interesting web sites on the Internet about aquatic macroinvertebrates.  Some of these sites are:

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~sos-iwla/Stream-Study/StreamStudyHomePage/StreamStudy.HTML : A good beginner's page.

http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dow/stream/orderpageone.htm : A macro key designed by the New York Dept. of Conservation for volunteer monitors

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~sos-iwla/Stream-Study/Key/MacroKeyIntro.HTML: a nice on-line key to aquatic macroinvertebrates

http://www.epa.gov/ceisweb1/ceishome/atlas/bioindicators/biologicalindicators.html : Information about aquatic bioindicators.
