Trip to Crooked Lake Biological Station

A highlight of our limnology class is the annual trip to Indiana University's field station on Crooked Lake.  Crooked Lake is a deep (Zmax = 106 feet), 206-acre natural lake located in Whitley County, about 10 miles north of Columbia City.  Crooked Lake has superior water quality.  It supports one of the few native, reproducing populations of Ciscoe (a freshwater salmonid) in Indiana.

Here are some of the activities we will undertake

bulletCompare the water characteristics of Crooked Lake with Little Crooked Lake - a connected lake that receives most of the watershed runoff.
bulletExamine evidence of diel vertical migration of Daphnia.  We will examine the vertical distribution of Daphnia from samples collected at Noon and at Midnight.
bulletCollect, weigh and measure fish captured in trap nets and gill nets that Indiana Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologists will set out for us the day before our arrival.

Students will also have time to hike in the adjacent nature preserve, fish, swim, and study.  Here is the tentative schedule and list of things to bring .
