Field Trip:

Stonehenge, Salisbury, Glastonbury and Bath

Saturday -  Monday, 26 - 28 July, 2008

This field trip will take us to some of the most beautiful sites and oldest structures in England.  We are fortunate to have Susannah Kyte of Proscenium Tours leading us and providing background information on this trip.  We will leave early Saturday and head straight to Stonehenge - the true origins and purpose of which still elude us to this day.

On the way to Salisbury we will visit Old Sarum Castle, a predecessor of Salisbury dating back to 500 BC.

Once in Salisbury we will visit the open air Charter Market, have lunch, tour the medieval Salisbury Cathedral, and view Magna Carta, signed by King John in 1215.  Magna Carta provided a model for the formative days of our own government.  In the late afternoon we will travel to the ancient city of Bath.

This stunningly beautiful city, built in the mouth of an extinct volcano, derives its name from the ancient Roman Baths.  It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage City for its historic significance, beautiful architecture, and imposing Abbey.

We will spend the night at the University of Bath, taking dinner in town.

On Sunday morning, we will travel to the legendary town of Glastonbury, where we will visit the Abbey, Glastonbury Tor, and the Chalice Well.  We will return to Bath on Sunday evening, and on Monday we will enjoy a walking tour of Lower Town and the Roman baths.  After lunch we will visit the Royal Crescent and have tea in the Pump Room.  From there we will head back to Oxford for an early evening arrival.
